All about IoT and its applications

All about IoT and its applications

In today’s developing world, many new concepts are emerging. One of them is IoT.

What is IoT?

IoT stands for Internet of Things. The Internet of Things (IoT) is an interconnected system of distinctively addressable physical items with various levels of processing, sensing, and actuation capabilities. These devices share the capability to communicate through a joint platform. The main objective of IoT is to make a way for devices to connect through any network, path, or service. IoT is being regarded as the subsequent phase concerning the evolution of the internet.

Considering today’s needs of the common man, a huge amount of data is shared via the internet. We make use of various devices such as Smartphones, cameras, home appliances, industrial systems, and many more for sharing information via the internet. These devices though accomplish real-time monitoring, tracing, system recognizations, etc.

With all this in mind, the demand for IoT will always keep expanding due to the functions it provides.

How big is IoT?

IoT is a vast field. The IoT market size was valued at USD 384.70 billion in 2021. It is expected to rise from USD 478.36 billion in 2022 to USD 2465.26 billion by 2029.

Applications of IoT:

Along with numerous potential applications, IoT also has applications in daily aspects of life.

1. Smart cities:

IoT plays a vital role in improving and enhancing the smartness of cities and their infrastructure. IoT applications concerning smart cities include:

  • Intelligent transportation systems
  • Smart buildings
  • Traffic congestion
  • Waste management
  • smart lighting
  • smart parking
  • urban maps

Some of the already developed applications in this area are the Aware home and the Smart Santander functionalities.

2. Healthcare:

    IoT applications concerning healthcare include:

  • tracking of patients, staff, and objects,
  • identifying, as well as authenticating, individuals
  • automatic gathering of data and sensing.
  • Hospital workflow can be significantly improved once the patient flow is tracked.

3. Smart living:

Concerning smart living, IoT can be applied to control the switching of devices thereby saving energy and avoiding accidents. It can be inculcated in such a way that it makes the handling of devices and overall work efficient and unambiguous way.

  • For example, Smart appliances can include refrigerators with LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) screens. This can also be linked to smartphones. This will provide a way for managing the food stored in the refrigerator. It will make it easy to locate what is stored and what has to be replaced.

4. Smart Agriculture :

IoT applications in the agricultural sector include:

  • Examining the moisture present in the soil
  • In the case of vineyards, monitoring the trunk diameter
  • control and preserve the quantity of vitamins
  • regulate microclimate conditions
  • Studying weather conditions
  • forecasting of ice information, drought, wind changes, rain or snow,
  • controlling temperature and humidity levels to prevent fungus as well as other microbial contaminants.

Conclusion:

IoT is such a field of networking that will keep developing, improving, and enhancing. It will keep innovating new innovative forms for management. Which will require new forms of software engineering and project management. It has quite a diverse application and will keep emerging in near future.
