Postpartum haemorrhage - an insurmountable problem?

Researchers at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center have developed a novel intrauterine vacuum-induced hemorrhage-control device that has shown promising results in the rapid treatment of postpartum hemorrhage. In a recent study, the device achieved successful treatment in 94% of participants with postpartum hemorrhage or abnormal postpartum uterine bleeding. The device uses low-level vacuum to induce uterine myometrial contraction to achieve control of abnormal postpartum uterine bleeding. Definitive control of abnormal bleeding was reported in a median of 3 minutes after connection to vacuum. The majority of investigators reported the device as easy to use and would recommend it. The study's authors concluded that intrauterine vacuum-induced hemorrhage control may provide a new rapid and effective treatment option for abnormal postpartum uterine bleeding or postpartum hemorrhage, with the potential to prevent severe maternal morbidity and mortality.
