Scientists Found A Mysterious Diamond From Outer Space

4.5 billion years ago Scientists expect that the diamond formed after a collision between a dwarf planet and a large asteroid. Researchers from Australia and the United Kingdom confirmed that according to their recent study, A mysterious diamond from an ancient dwarf planet has found its way to the earth’s surface. This all things begin when Andy  Tomkins, geologist, and professor at Australia’s Monash University, was doing fieldwork categorizing meteors, CNN reported this.

In a space rock in Africa’s northwest, he detected a peculiar “bent” diamond. According to the study, what was found in the meteorite was a rare hexagonal stone which is known as lonsdaleite. And which was formed from a supercritical fluid at high temperatures and moderate pressures. “Later Lonsdaleite was partially replaced by a diamond as the environment cooled and the pressure decreased” an article published by RMIT university Tomkin said.

Researchers expect the diamond to have formed after the collision happens between the dwarf planet and a large asteroid about 4.5 billion years ago. There’s strong evidence that there’s a newly discovered formation process for the lonsdaleite and regular diamond, which is like a supercritical chemical vapor deposition process that has taken place in these space rocks, probably in the dwarf planet shortly after a catastrophic collision,” RMIT professor Dougal McCulloch said.

It has been also discovered that lonsdaleite may be tougher than typical diamonds, which have a cubic structure. Its peculiar creation may have significant technological applications….according to academics. “Nature has provided us with a process to try and replicate in industry," Professor Tomkins said. "We think that lonsdaleite could be used to make tiny, ultra-hard machine parts if we can develop an industrial process that promotes the replacement of pre-shaped graphite parts by lonsdaleite.”
