To achieve a sustainable world- open source decarbonization is an option

The globe is currently facing a climate emergency and we need to act now before it is too late. The reason we are in a climate and energy crisis is because the world has relied on fossil fuels for export, instead of focusing on renewable energy and energy efficiency. An alternative solution to the climate crisis is electrification.

The research by Pearce

Electrification is a process of heating with heat pumps that has advantages in reducing the need for oil in electrical vehicles, and reducing the usage of natural gas. Renewable energy and energy efficiency works hand in hand with electrification as the usage of coal and natural gas is reduced as well resultant climate destabilisation and carbon emissions.

The different types of climate technology

To decrease costs of equipment and increase innovation, an effective solution that has proven to be effective is a free and open source hardware design, which is pertaining to a wide range of industries. This process can accelerate the implementation of strategies and policies regarding practical implementation to reduce the usage of oil, gas and coal. The article by Pearce visually shows how the power of open source will be explained and to show how it can improve the performance and decrease the costs of decarbonization technologies.”

The first graphic is a map and notes down dots to show coal-power plants in the United States. The graph is showing that the coal-powered industries release an immense amount of pollution in the air that people are being killed by breathing this toxic air.

The next graphic is a flow diagram showing an open hardware. The article states that “the target criminal country can be a political rival, an enemy or a country threatening the stability or safety of a region or the world. Next, both the major exports for the target criminal country are identified from public data as well as the imports to the country doing the analysis are identified. These imports and exports are quantified in economic terms for specific products.”

Solar powered devices are the next graphic to fast track the transition to renewable energy. Further, an open source Discarded computer running OpenSCAD is used to reduce the cost of scientific equipment. Further, RepRap users use 3-D parts that  collaborate with open source principles on the internet. This company also found a sustainable source such as PLA that has an “ideal fused filament fabrication material (bottom graph with notably higher tensile strengths than ABS”. Moreover, during a humanitarian crisis an open-source 3D printer is used for resilience purposes during a humanitarian crisis and where the products are needed for a specific community. Further, a delta-style RepRap 3-D printer can be converted to a 3D stage that includes mixing and eventually fills up wells. Additionally, an open source delta-style RepRap is used by a USB microscope. A 3-D printable open source centrifuge is used on a webcam or cellphone to enable an open source computer vision software.

An open source syringe pump helps the scientific community save on costs. Further, open source hardware is growing rapidly as substantial economic savings is being gained. An open access journal, HardwareX published open hardware in order to open-source microsyringe an autosampler. During Covid-19, HardwareX had an open hardware to help people during the time with ventilators and respirators.  HardwareX also wants to decarbonize the world with the development of open hardware where there are low cost monitoring devices that can track the amount of carbon dioxide that is in the atmosphere. Furthermore, technologies that directly offset carbon emissions is also a plus for HardwareX, this is based on technology that involves renewable energy, transportation electrification and storage of efficiency.  Open hardware technologies by HardwareX can help expand the usage of renewable energy for operations like agri voltaics used for smart agriculture and are low cost climate stations. The reduction of water loss during evaporation is aided by an open source design for a floating photovoltaic (FPV) system. A solar photovoltaic racking system, which is an open source 3-D printed x-wire based, is able to reduce costs. Moreover, a charge controller with a large solar photovoltaic system has a lightning arrestor and a fused battery.

Time for action is now

Climate change has become a climate emergency and with the world evolving climate technology is being developed at a rapid rate. We need to support climate technology and act now.
